Traditional agricultural crops have been farmed for thousands of years. In the past 100 years we have seen rapid increases in productivity on the back of improved breeding, machinery, technology and research.

Aquaculture is really in its infancy and we are just starting to make these same advancements through breeding programs, feed development and sustainability initiatives.

We have started a domestication program for both our prawns and our Cobia. Moving away from utilising wild caught brood-stock not only creates opportunity for breeding programs and genetic improvement but also removes considerable risk due to uncertain wild catch rates and biosecurity issues.

However, this must be done properly to ensure the long-term viability of our breeding programs. To this end we have engaged CSIRO to utilise their knowledge and skills in commercialising this technology and developing rigorous genetic management programs.
