From Hatchery to Market

The Mitris family started Pacific Reef Fisheries in 1998. Over the last 17 years they have built the business to a highly successful prawn and fish farming operation that produces over 1000 tonnes of premium seafood per year.

Hatchery – We operate a modern state-of-the-art hatchery at Guthalungra in North Queensland, supplying our total seed stock needs each year. This includes a domestication program whereby we can select the best of the best breeding stock which enables us to constantly improve our product and systems. This also ensures we can maintain full biosecurity for our animals.

Farm – The 98ha Pacific Reef Fisheries facility at Ayr North Queensland has been operating since 1994. The farm is immediately adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park where we draw our water to grow our premium quality Black Tiger Prawns and North Queensland Cobia. We take this privilege very seriously and have developed world’s best water treatment technologies to ensure we operate sustainably now and into the future. We also use only the best diets from certified sustainable suppliers.

Processing – Harvest and processing is carried out in strict accordance with Australian HACCP principles, insisted upon by our major Australian chain store customers. We are also AQIS approved for export markets. Each year our processing staff undergo formal training conducted by industry professionals. Strict attention is applied to quality control at all stages of the process, ensuring a premium quality product for the consumer.

Fresh product is available from Christmas to June each year. In addition we supply frozen product over the whole year.
