Pacific Reef Fisheries (Bowen) has applied to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) for permission to expand the prawn farm at Guthalungra in the Townsville / Whitsunday Management Area of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Pacific Reef Fisheries proposes to establish new prawn aquaculture operations through the staged construction of 259 hectares of new prawn ponds and associated infrastructure.
Activities proposed within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park are: (1) construction and operation of one sea water intake pipeline; (2) construction and operation of one wastewater discharge pipeline; (3) construction and operation of one submerged pump station; and (4) discharge of wastewater into the Marine Park. All these activities are proposed within 300 metres radius of 19º51’4.60”S,147º52’2.92”E.
